Can a foreign buyer purchase Japanese real estate with cash?

更新日: 2026-09-02 / 最終確認日: 2026-09-02

Answer

There is no general prohibition on a foreign buyer purchasing Japanese real estate with cash solely because of nationality. The buyer still needs the documents required for contracting, identity checks, settlement and ownership registration. Overseas residents should also confirm address-proof, domestic-contact and any applicable foreign-exchange reporting requirements, and coordinate the remittance and closing process in advance.

Verification date
