Can I rent a home in Japan without a residence card?

更新日: 2026-09-02 / 最終確認日: 2026-09-02

Answer

Sometimes, but there is no universal rule. For short-stay or overseas applicants without a residence card, the landlord, manager and guarantor company may separately assess identity, intended stay, ability to pay and local contact arrangements.

Search tips

  • Explain your immigration/travel situation at the start
  • State the intended lease period
  • Confirm how rent will be paid
  • Check guarantor-company eligibility

Caution

“No residence card required” is not a nationwide rule for all rentals. Check the listing and screening conditions for each property.
