Can I rent a home in Japan without a residence card?
Answer
Sometimes, but there is no universal rule. For short-stay or overseas applicants without a residence card, the landlord, manager and guarantor company may separately assess identity, intended stay, ability to pay and local contact arrangements.
Search tips
- Explain your immigration/travel situation at the start
- State the intended lease period
- Confirm how rent will be paid
- Check guarantor-company eligibility
Caution
“No residence card required” is not a nationwide rule for all rentals. Check the listing and screening conditions for each property.
