Can a non-resident buy property in Japan?

更新日: 2026-09-04 / 最終確認日: 2026-09-03

Answer

Japan has registration procedures for overseas foreign individuals and entities to become registered owners of real estate. Additional address evidence and domestic-contact information may be required.

Important distinction

Ownership registration is separate from mortgage eligibility, remittance and tax rules. Withholding can also arise where the seller, rather than the buyer, is a non-resident.

General information only; individual transactions require professional review.
